Chesterfield Sofa's and Chairs

Suits hanging on a rack
History of the chesterfield

It may surprise you to learn that chesterfield sofas and chairs was invented back in the mid 1700s, when Lord Philip Stanhope, the fourth Earl of chesterfield, commissioned a piece of furniture for his guests to sit on. More specifically, he required a striking piece of furniture with a low sit and high back to allow his gentlemen to seat comfortably, but without creasing their suits. Stanhope employed a local craftsman to design a suitable piece of furniture therefore the first chesterfield was created.

Chesterfields sofas became somewhat of a status symbol, appearing only in the homes of the wealthy, surrounded by the truly grand decor.

Their popularity soon grew and became a fixture in many exclusive gentlemen's clubs in London, providing a comfortable setting  for London's wealthiest men to sit, relax and dine.
